Main Unit
Simple, compact design with versatile connectivity and ease of use inherited from
Denon's S series
The S-81DABhas been built on the design concept inherited
from Denon's S-301 home theater system that was released last year and has since
received considerable acclaim. This design features ease of operation combined
with a visually pleasing appearance in a round form that integrates the main unit
and speakers. The front panel on the main unit is made of tactile aluminum, and
the control keys have been arranged in a layout that make them easy to find even
for beginners. The speaker output terminals have a unique shape with easy-to-handle
one-touch cable connection jacks that are color-coded for the Left and Right channels.
High-power 50W+50W digital amp
The compact body of the main unit houses
a robust 50W+50W power amp. Despite its compact size, this amp reproduces music
through the speakers with considerable detail and power on a rock-stable foundation.
The amp also has a builtin Speaker Optimize filter circuit that takes maximum
advantage of the speakers' characteristics to ensure high-grade audio reproduction
from the overall system.
iPod® support
The front panel
includes a port for connecting Apple Computer's iPod music player via a dedicated
cable that comes with the S-81DAB. iPod playback versatility can be expanded by
connecting Denon's separately available ASD-1R iPod Control Dock to a dedicated
control port and other terminals on the rear panel. With the ASD-1R, the user
can enjoy not only music from the iPod but also video on a TV monitor, and the
remote control unit that comes with the S-81DAB can be used to control the
iPod.*
*Supports 3rd-generation and later iPods equipped with a dock connector.
Some features may not work depending on the version of the software used.
Analog Music Input, for connecting a portable player
The front panel
also provides a mini-jack input terminal for connecting a portable digital or
analog audio player and enjoying music from the player in high sound quality.
MP3 and WMA audio files supported
The S-81DAB plays MP3 and WMA audio
files stored on CD-R or CD-RW discs*. Music libraries on computers or portable
digital audio players can also easily be enjoyed through the S-81DAB. The names
of files, artists, and tracks are shown on the S-81DAB's large display
*
Some discs may not be playable due to poor writing conditions or other factors.
Optical digital output terminal
Useful CD playback functions
The
S-81DAB provides two types of playback patterns: Repeat Play, Random play and
Program Play.
DAB Tuner
The S-81DAB features a Digital
Audio Broadcast (DAB) tuner as well as the conventional analog FM/AM tuner. DAB
radio programs with the sonic quality of a CD, free of distortion, can be received
through a small non-directional antenna. With the S-81DAB, it is also possible
to automatically scan and pre-set DAB stations. Up to 100 station pre-sets (60
digital and 40 analog) can be stored in memory. The display on the front panel
contains two parts, enabling it to display the station name, program type, date,
time and other information being broadcast from the DAB station. Of course, the
station's frequency and audio format are also displayed.
60-station
FM/AM Preset
Up to a total of 60 FM/AM stations can be preset and called
up through the system remote control unit. A convenient Auto Preset Memory feature
is also provided.
Handy Timers
The S-81DAB includes an
"Everyday Timer" that automatically turns on and off the power at a
preset time each day, a "Once Timer" that automatically turns on and
off the power that has been preset once during the day, and a "Sleep Timer"
that automatically turns off the power in a time interval that can be preset in
10-minute increments from 10 to 60 minutes.
Remote control unit with
simple design
The buttons that are most often used have been arranged
so that they are easy to find and operate. The other buttons are accessed by
simply opening a small door.
Speaker System
A marriage
of European sound design and Denon engineering
In the history of audio,
Denon speakers have been developed on a foundation of European taste from such
countries as Denmark and England. The S-81DAB's speaker system represents the
result of collaboration between Denon engineers and European sound designers intimately
familiar with classical music. The speakers have been tuned to produce a European
sound that tastefully matches the main unit. These compact speakers have been
carefully crafted with the latest technology and materials to produce a sound
that is sensitive to the music.
Large 12-cm woofer unit with D.D.L.
(Denon Double Layer) cone
The newly-developed D.D.L. (Denon Double
Layer)cone has been used for the woofer diaphragm. This dual-layer diaphragm whose
structure is the result of meticulous simulations is both highly rigid and light-weight
and achieves a precision piston motion across the entire sonic spectrum. The ingenious
structural design ensures that sympathetic vibration from the edge do not adversely
affect the audio characteristics but deliver the best possible quality in sound.
Improvements in top-bottom symmetry in magnetic flux distribution and other areas,
together with the magnetic circuit of advanced design, bring out a deeply impressive
strength of expression.
Soft-dome tweeter
The tweeter features
a 2.5-cm soft-dome diaphragm. Designed to achieve flat radiation impedance following
a rigorous regimen of tests, the shape of the frame helps to produce a supple
sound. A highly-magnetic, low-distortion neodium magnet has been used in the magnetic
circuitry.
Antimagnetic design
Cabinet design
Metal
powder has been mixed in the speaker cabinet walls to ensure that the cabinet
is not only highly rigid but also suppresses unwanted vibration. Along with enhancing
the S-81DAB's overall sense of design, the gentle shape of the cabinet contributes
to a sense of presence as a Hi-Fi speaker. The speakers can be set up vertically
or horizontally according to the installation of the stand, or they can be mounted
on a wall using the supplied brackets. The S-81DAB's speakers offer considerable
flexibility for system set-up.
Speaker cables with one-touch jacks
and color coding for easy connection
The connectors on the speaker
cables and the speaker terminals on the amp have been color coded-white for the
Left channel and red for the Right-to simplify system set-up. The one-touch jacks
on the cables make the connection process a snap. |
